OOBLECK
Ms. Alicia taught our first lesson on oobleck. This used the concept of combining things together and states of matter. Oobleck is made by mixing water and corn starch. It is a liquid when sitting in a bowl but becomes a solid when pressure is used on it, such as when you squeeze some of it in your hand.
The lesson began by reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss. We then got into our two small groups and used measuring cups to measure out water and corn starch in bowls to make the oobleck. The children got their hands dirty if they wanted to or used popsicle sticks if they wanted their hands clean. They played with the oobleck and talked about how it felt and how sometimes it was hard and sometimes it was not. Some students did not have as exciting of an experience because they did not have enough corn starch in their mixture, but they still enjoyed playing with the materials.
